Frequently asked questions

  • Yes. Arunachal Pradesh requires an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for all Indian citizens (free to apply online or can be arranged for you). Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) issued by the Government of India.

The best season is late spring through early autumn. Peak season is May to September, when Sela Pass is clear and valleys are green. Winters (November–March) see heavy snow and road closures.

  • A moderate fitness level is needed for long drives and short hikes at altitude. Tawang is at 10,000+ ft, so one should acclimatize. If prone to altitude sickness, take it slow in the first days (rest in Guwahati/Dirang) and keep hydrated.

Arunachal cuisine is largely vegetarian, with local dishes like Zan (barley porridge), Khura (fermented cheese), and Gyapa Khazi (Thukpa noodle soup) commonly served. Hotels will offer North Indian and Chinese dishes. Pack some snacks (energy bars, glucose) for road travel.

  • Mobile connectivity is very limited in Arunachal. Expect good signal only in larger towns (Guwahati, Tezpur, Dirang, Tawang town). BSNL/Airtel networks work best. Download offline maps and keep emergency numbers handy.

  • In addition to clothing layers, carry sunblock, sunglasses (strong sunlight and reflection off snow/lakes), a hat, and personal medications. Reusable water bottles can be refilled, but boil or treat tap water if outside hotels.
